Hertford Vale is very proud to have an Eco-Club and an Eco community. Our school is committed to helping our planet by enhancing and sustaining our school grounds and local areas. Eco Club meets once a fortnight to look at ways we can improve our school, encourage sustainability and help with the ‘Big Issues’. Eco Club is open to all pupils in KS2.

The Eco-Committee at Hertford Vale C of E Primary School has achieved the 2024/2025 Eco-Schools Green Flag Award, meeting all the requirements successfully. The school's application received excellent feedback, described as a joy to assess. Here are the key highlights:
* Pupils in your school have done a fantastic job of cultivating support from within the school and the wider community.
* You have engaged and motivated your pupils, giving them interest and a passion to want to make positive changes to help the planet and this is an outstanding achievement.
* One of your Year 6 girls found an innovative way to support the environment and wrote that amazing letter to Primary Tech. This is the sort of creative thinking that we need to make the positive changes
* WOW – we were blown away by your Eco-Code. The acrostic poem is bright, eye-catching, and an amazing summary of your journey. The team loved the final line, ‘Everyone doing their bit to make a healthier environment, to help future generations’.
* Your website brilliantly showcases your achievements, and I loved having a look at it! Everything you have done just looks so child-focused and enriching for them I don’t think I’ve ever seen a patch of grass look so tidy as the one in your litter-picking photo and whilst I’m obviously well aware of toilet twinning I don’t think the project has resonated as much with me before as when I saw your proud children (I also love that they raised funds via a book sale)! Your school community must be incredibly proud of all your efforts!
In addition to being honoured with the prestigious Green Flag Award, the school also achieved it with Merit, attributed to their hard work and dedication so thank you to the members of the school community who have supported the Eco Club.
A huge thank you goes out to the exceptional children who attend the Eco Club, both past and present members, who have shown incredible dedication and should take immense pride in their accomplishments.

Following an environmental review of the school, we have chosen that this year we wanted to focus on biodiversity, global citizenship and litter. Our Eco Club empowers students to want to help the planet; we are committed to creating change which will benefit future generations!

Since Eco Club began last year, we have recycled and repainted benches, planted flowers and grown vegetables, fundraised for charity, gone on litter picks and built bug friendly homes. We have developed an eco-code which is our promise to protect the planet. In lessons, we have influenced teachers to include environmental education within the curriculum. This has been through class litter surveys, blogs about plastic pollution, writing letters to the council asking for a recycling bin, growing potatoes and tomatoes, and participating in Practical Action activities which help us understand how we can build thriving lives and livelihoods on the frontlines of climate change. We have also been joined by some fantastic visitors who have expanded our environmental knowledge including Power Down Pete, the Marine Society, NY Rotters, Northern Gas Networks and JP Developers.

“I like that it is fun and you get to do lots of activities like planting and litterpicks. It is good to know that we are helping the planet.” Jessica, Y6

“I like helping the environment. It’s good to do stuff out of school to help like a litter pick.” Thomas, Y3

There are some photos below of some of the fantastic work the Eco-Club have got up to and some of the environmental learning that has been occuring in our classrooms.

Toilet twinning

We are extremely proud that our Eco Club successfully raised enough money to fund a toilet for a community in Tanzania.  The children raised the money themselves by organising and running a book sale in school.

The toilet will make a huge difference in the village and is a wonderful example of the children being courageous advocates for positive change.

Our Eco Code

The children in Eco Club created an Eco Code that encompases all that we are trying to achieve.  A great deal of thought and time went into making this as meaningful as possible to all our Eco Club members.
